Aliens in New York is a
short-term, interactive large scale installation that I would like to set up in as many public places and parks as possible in New York City.
The installation is comprised of many sculptures that I call Peekaboo-kun,
painted boards – each one representing a person from a different country. The original face, which I painted on the board, can be replaced by the face
of a participant.
This allows them to try becoming someone else in a very instinctual and
visceral way, inspiring curiosity. I believe that this project can create peace and understanding between
cultures. A new consciousness. This is my ultimate goal.
For me, the "Miracle Moment" is when participants interact with
my work and experience the transformation process. They feel strange, questioning and discovering what it is like to become someone else.
That is the ultimate moment of art making. It is very exciting.
Each board has a description on the back of it that tells a story about
the person it represents: the ethnicity, personality of the character, and an
explanation of the culture. Participants can read, enjoy and satisfy their
I will create a short Manga novel booklet to accompany the exhibitions. The booklet will explain the history of the surrounding
neighborhood, the Peekaboo-kun characters and will be designed to further satisfy curiosity. It will provide something tangible to remember the experience of transformation.
I am an “Alien” who immigrated to New York from Japan five years ago. The diversity in this city inspired me to create Aliens in New York. I am using stereotypical mannerisms of new immigrants intentionally to express
my love of this diversity. I hope my art will open a new dialogue among the residents
and promote better understandings of each other.
I have been working on this Peekaboo-kun art project for over 20 years.
I have completed 60 people Peekaboo-kun of 25 different ethnic groups, and 40 of others including animals, foods, flowers, trees, and even imaginary creatures. I intend to make more Peekaboo-kun based on actual people that I have
met in New York.
I would like to carry out this exhibition, ultimately, twice a year.
Wouldn't it be amazing! to see people interacting with more than 100 Peekaboo-peices all at once? I need your support to make it happen. Please join the Facebook Page where you will find details and more information.
